Markeaton Park
Markeaton Park and Mundy Play Centre is situated about two miles out of Derby city centre. This 207 acres parkland attracts over 1 million visitors per year which makes it one the most popular parks in the East Midlands. Limo Hire Derby can provide private tours with door- to- door service to this park.
The land of the park was originally owned by the Earl of Chester, and then was bought by the Mundy family in 1516. During 1755 Markeaton Hall was rebuilt by James Denstone, a Derby architect. Following the death of Emily Mundy in 1929, the family moved to Mackworth and gave the Hall and 20 acres of the land to the council and a year later the council purchased the rest of the land.
During 1931 the park was formally opened by HRH Prince George and the park continued to develop, providing more facilities to the public. The lake was enlarged to allow opportunity for boating and trout fishing which was opened by Edward Prince of Wales in 1934.
Unfortunately the hall became rundown and was demolished in 1964. The land where the hall stood is now known as Markeaton Terrace and displays impressive flowers beds and a fountain.
The old stables of the hall host a craft village, providing visitors the opportunity to purchase a variety of craft items.
You can relax and enjoy refreshments in the former Orangery. During the summer months you can sit outside and take in the impressive horticultural displays.
